…So there’s the other side. Some believe that Google’s decision to work within the limits imposed by the Chinese government is just the foot under the tent. As with all the West’s previous dealings with China, the latter will become more Westernized and more open as a result of the contact. Thus, we ought to welcome the idea since it means China becomes less a threat to us.

What about Walmart? Are we going to bash Walmart for pandering shamelessly to communist dictators?

In an effort to lower prices, and sell more stuff, Walmart goes out of it's way to buy from the lowest source. That might not be a bad thing.

What if that source is Communist China, and Walmart chooses to be blind to HOW China suppliers can sell stuff so cheap?

In return for the lower cost goods, Walmart is building stores in China. You can be sure that nothing that might offend the government is on the shelves of those stores.

IMO, it is very much the same thing as Microsoft, or Google. However in Walmarts case a lot more money is at stake. The cost of living is a big part of how we measure our economy. Higher costs for things means inflation. Walmart is almost completely responsible for lower prices to consumers on a wide range of everyday goods. This directly translates to better economic times (despite higher oil prices for example).

The Chinese will get satellite dishes for uncensored internet. The internet WILL find away around any form of censorship. Google, and MS know this, the Chinese Government doesn't.
